Court users who need sober housing or transportation support must have an open case or have court involvement that is current or within the past year at a Project NORTH court. Individuals are required to meet with a Navigator for an in-person intake to ensure that they meet the sober housing and transportation eligibility requirements. Inspection Policy

Promote the residence with marketing and advertising that is supported by Halfway house accurate, open, and honest claims. All of the homes in the MASH network have been inspected and received a passing grade for a set of standards we insist members uphold in their homes. Resident and staff orientations include how to greet and interact with neighbors and/or concerned parties. The Massachusetts Alliance for Sober Housing (MASH) plays a critical role in supporting individuals in recovery by helping to ensure access to high-quality sober living environments across Massachusetts. Insurance and liability are critical for sober house operators. While not mandated by state law, obtaining appropriate coverage mitigates risks. General liability insurance covers bodily injury or property damage claims, while professional liability insurance protects against claims of negligence or inadequate care. Yet for many, the cost of sober housing can be a barrier to recovery. Assess each potential resident’s strengths and needs, and determine whether the level of support available within the residence is appropriate. Provide assistance to the residents with appropriate referrals.

Identified deficiencies must be addressed to maintain certification, reinforcing a commitment to quality care and support. Recovery Support Navigation services are available to court users and family members impacted by substance use and involved with any court department. Individuals do not need to have an open case or be on probation to access Recovery Support Navigation services.

At minimum, data collection will protect individual’s identity, be used for continuous quality improvement, be part of day-to-day operations, and regularly reviewed by staff and residents (where appropriate). We provide this support in a few different ways including via outreach into Manchester city centre.

If there are any changes to the sober home policies or sober home management, please notify MASH to update our files. An increase in beds will require an additional inspection to the sober home.

Take appropriate action to stop intimidation, bullying, sexual harassment, and/or otherwise threatening behavior of residents, staff, and visitors within the residence. Provide for the health, safety, and welfare of each resident. Honor individuals’ rights to choose their recovery paths within the parameters defined by the residence organization.
